At the Forefront of Change and Innovation: Sharen Phillips

Sharen Phillips

At The Forem, we are thrilled to have some of the world’s most successful and driven leaders in our Mentor Program, and Sharen Phillips is no exception.

As the current Head of US Channel Sales Partners at Google, Sharen’s primary focus is solution selling — solving business problems by leveraging and enabling her partners to provide scalable solutions to marketer clients.

“Working at Google, we are at the forefront of innovation,” Sharen told us recently. It is a position that is perfectly suited to her passions. “I love consumer trends that drive transformative industry change. From the birth of the internet, when I worked at Prodigy Internet as Senior Product Marketing Manager leading voiceover IP calling, to Time Inc where I launched the first retail-sold magazine gift card to drive subscriptions sales, I love being at the forefront of strategic change and innovation. Embracing and creating first-of-kind solutions is exciting!”

Sharen’s other passion is leadership and development, which is one of the reasons why she became a Mentor at The Forem.

“Throughout my career, mentors have been influential in helping me navigate my career. Starting in the summer of my first college internship, I connected with experienced industry mentors to help bounce ideas and situations off, providing perspective beyond my comfort zone or expertise. As I believe that Paying Forward is the biggest compliment, I mentor others as I am passionate about guiding people through challenging situations and empowering them to strive for their dreams.”

And most importantly, she knows her perspective is sorely needed.

“To be someone who has continued to thrive in corporate America, but who can also speak to the specific professional and personal challenges you face as a minority navigating the workplace, is enormously beneficial to one’s development and progression,” she told us.

Her goal is to help people see what is possible for them right now, removing self-limiting thoughts to unlock gifts they already have (not need to develop).

Her best career advice?

  • Always play to your strengths, which will help set you up for great success.

  • If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.

  • Be biased to action, but also be a team player.

  • Fail fast. Learn Faster which will help you be successful.

  • If you don’t ask you won’t receive – closed mouths don’t get fed.

The worst thing you can do, she cautions, is believe that great work will automatically get noticed and rewarded. It’s important to take the lead in your own career — so if this is something you struggle with, it may be time to sit down with Sharen.
